Aggressive skin cancers behave worse in NHL patients and raise ...

Mayo Clinic researchers believe they have begun to solidify the fact that not only are non-Hodgkin's lymphomas more common in patients with aggressive skin cancers like melanoma and Merkel cell carcinoma, but also that the lymphomas in these patients has an influence over their outcomes.

Writing in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the researchers noted that these skin cancers occur between 2.3-3.1 times as frequently in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

They also noted that these aggressive skin cancers in fact behave much worse in NHL patients, leading to poorer and poorer outcomes in these patients, with lower overall survival. Furthermore, these NHL patients are at a higher risk of dying from one of these skin cancers.

Their recommendation was to urge doctors to educate lymphoma patients about this association and suggest that they visit a dermatologist.
